Because I'm A Mother

Tamerlan Tsarnaev practiced boxing at the Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts center in Boston in this April 2009 photo.

Because I'm a mother, I grieve for the dead in Boston.  I grieve for Martin Richard, Lingzi Lu, Krystle Campbell, Sean Collier and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

None of them were over 30, and little Martin was only 8.

I can't begin to imagine the horror of losing a child so suddenly, so violently, so senselessly as the parents of Martin, Krystle, Lingzi and Sean did on Monday and on Thursday.  I can't fathom the horror of learning that a child of mine was the perpetrator of such horrible crimes as the parents of Tamerlan Tsarnaev discovered this week, and then learning of his death while police were trying to capture him and his brother.

Because I'm a mother, my heart is broken for the parents of these young people.

I am praying for their families, and for the repose of their souls.

  1. Thank you for this post. My heart, my mother's heart breaks as well. Our youth and young adults live in very conflicted times. As a mother, I have learned that I cannot insulate my two grown sons from this world but I can pray, pray and pray some more. Our adult children will say and do things of which we don't approve and we worry because we care so much about their souls and see further down the road than they. The truth is that the two young men who were swept into such darkness were used as weapons of another enemy, the evil one. There is indeed a battle, a spiritual one and this is why all of our prayers, rosaries, Divine Mercy Chaplets, Holy Eucharists and fasts and devotions offered are so very important. We cannot stop but must persevere. We are part of Mary's spiritual army. We too bear arms with praying hands, steadfast spirits and love for our neighbor.

  2. As a Mother I feel the same way. I feel so horrible for all those affected by this tragedy. When the 19 year old was hiding out and bleeding, I could almost feel how scared he was, yes he did horrible things, but I felt for him too. I have a 19 year old. AS a parent I can not imagine seeing my sons hunted down on TV, because we love them no matter what, we may not approve but we love them.

  3. I can't grieve for the terrorists who committed such evil and brought so much suffering upon innocent people.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. And God's justice will prevail for the murders.

    1. God will decide the final fate of the Tsarnaev brothers, and indeed all of us. I hope you will follow my blog again, Donna.

  4. I grieve too for all the children who are seeing or hearing about these horrific actions in our country. I just don't recall a world like this when I was a child.

  5. It's impossible to fathom the pain those families are going through. Such a tragic loss of life. I grieve, too.
